Frequently Asked Questions

How often are events held?

Events are generally held once per month, on the third Thursday of the month (but not always, please check). Our season starts in September and ends in May with the AGM followed by our final talk of the season. We don't hold a talk in December.

Other ad-hoc events may also be listed on the website. These may be organised by other branches.

Do I need to pre-register for events?

You now need to pre-register for events. This is currently only available through the website. The committee will do their best to be fair to people who have registered. In the exceptional case where more than 120 people turn up to an event, those who have not registered will be cordially asked to give priority to those who have. Arriving in good time will help to secure your place.

Click on the Register link on our home page to register for our next event. You can also register in advance for any events on our Forthcoming Events page.

What time should I arrive?

Our talks generally start at 6:30pm. We try to be punctual, since it is discourteous to the presenter to arrive while they are talking. You can arrive any time from 6:00pm onwards, get yourself a tea or coffee and network with your colleagues who have also arrived a little early. Don't forget, you can continue networking after the talk as we provide drinks and a light buffet.

Who are the branch committee members?

Any committee members at the talk will be wearing a BCS badge showing their role on the committee. Please ask questions - we want your feedback so that we know if we are providing you with the service you require. You can also contact any committee member by sending an e-mail from the website.

Does the talk attract CPD points?

Yes, attendees get 3/4 of a point for attending events. CPD certificates are availbale after the talk.

Do I have to be a member to attend?

No, non members can attend our talks. However, if you attend a few talks and find them interesting and relevant, we would encourage you to consider becoming a member of the BCS. Please ask a committee member for details.

Can I join the committee?

The committee is always looking for members who are committed to assisting us with our successful programme of events, numbers permitting. We are particularly interested in persons with experience and an interest in press & publicity, education and industry. Please ask a committee member about current vacancies.
